In 1998, construction work for a control center near Pisa San Rossore station led to the discovery of Roman shipwrecks and their cargo, about 6 meters underground. The excavation revealed around thirty Roman boats, along with thousands of fragments of pottery, glass, metal, and organic materials. This site, known as the Ancient Roman Ships of Pisa, was completed in 2016 and is considered one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in recent years. The exhibition takes place inside the halls and vaults of the Medici Arsenals.

The visit to the museum is freely included with the registration for the AWRANA26 conference. For more information, please ask at the Registration desk upon arrival. https://www.navidipisa.it/

2. VISIT TO THE MUSEUM OF THE STATUE STELE OF LUNIGIANA AND THE ROMAN SETTLEMENT OF LUNI

The museum houses and displays a unique collection of prehistoric Stele Statues dating from the Eneolithic period to the Late Iron Age. These statues are among the oldest in Europe and represent a valuable example of the megalithic phenomenon. The museum is located within the evocative Piagnaro Castle, which has overlooked the town of Pontremoli from the slopes of Mount Molinatico for centuries. On the way back to Pisa, we will stop to visit the Roman settlement of Luni, or Portus Lunae, a significant Roman colony established in 177 BC, near the mouth of the Magra River. It played a vital role in Roman control of the region, especially due to its strategic location on the border between Liguria and Etruria. statuestele.org / museiliguria.cultura.gov.it
